Israel/Hamas War Situation Report #29

Military and Diplomatic Highlights:

·         Intense Israeli bombardment from air, land, and sea continued across much of the Gaza Strip on January 11th, resulting in further civilian casualties and destruction. The firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel also continued.

·         On January 10th, the Israeli Prime Minister stated that their goal is to rid of Hamas in Gaza and free their hostages.  Once these goals are achieved Gaza will be demilitarized and deradicalized.

o   145 trucks on January 11th

·         Between January 1-11, only 21% of planned aid deliveries of food, medicines, water, and other lifesaving supplies to the north of Wadi Gaza proceeded:

o   Humanitarian partners were forced to cancel or delay missions in two instances due to excessive delays at Israeli checkpoints or because the agreed routes were unpassable.

o   Of the five missions that were able to proceed, humanitarian partners were only able to deliver all the planned aid in two of these missions.

o   Overall, the rate of access denials seen in January 2024 so far presents a significant deterioration when compared to those of December 2023, where more than 70% of planned UN missions to the north were coordinated and undertaken.

·         The European Union as of January 11th reported that they have conducted 34 humanitarian flights carrying 1,486 tons of relief items and 1,500 logistics items.

·         On January 11th, the World Food Programme (WFP) was able to deliver crucial food assistance to people remaining in Gaza City.

·         The Israel Defense Force (IDF) on January 11th issued new evacuation orders to residents of the Al Mawasi area and several blocks near Salah Ad Deen Road in southern Gaza:

o   This area covers an estimated 4.6 square kilometers.

o   The IDF is preparing to operate in the area and ordered those affected to move to Deir al Balah.

o   More than 18,000 people and nine shelters, accommodating an unknown number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs), are expected to be affected by this latest round of orders.

·         The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees social workers are working in multiple shelters providing psychosocial first aid and specialized mental health care to over 80,000 IDPs.

·         On January 10th, a Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) ambulance was targeted on Salah al-Din Street at the entrance of Deir al-Balah in the middle of the Gaza Strip:

o   Four PRCS staff members and two patents were killed.  The staff members were:

ü  Paramedic Fadi Fuad Al-Ma'ni
