Israel/Hamas War Situation Report #60




Military and Diplomatic Highlights:  

·         The Israel Defense Force (IDF) reported that they killed the following terrorist leaders:

o   On August 30th, Wassem Hazem, the head of Hamas in Jenin, was killed in the northern Samaria area.

o   Ahmed Fozi Nazer Muhammad Wadia, the commander of the Hamas Nukhba Company and Muhammad Katrouy the Commander of the Islamic Jihad’s Central Camps Brigade was killed on August 31st. 

·         On September 4th, Hezbollah launched 65 projectiles into Northern Israel.  In response the IDF attacked Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.

 

Civil Protection and Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:

 

Israel

·         The Magen David Adom (MDA) on September 1st responded to a shooting attack on Route 35 in the Negev Region:

o   Three people were treated and transported to area hospitals.  Two of the victims were in critical condition and the other was in serious condition. 

 

Gaza Strip

·         The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported the following:

o   As of September 5th, PRCS teams have been operational for 333 days:

ü  100,000 patients or deceased individuals have been transported.

o   On September 5th, their Disaster Response Team distributed essential relief supplies (bread, canned food, baby formula, bottled water, and potatoes) to 1,175 families trapped in the Jenin Camp.

·         Healthcare and Public Health Updates:

o   As of September 1st, 27 Health Cluster partners reported that 15 Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) remain deployed and are supporting the local healthcare workforce.

o   The restoration of health services continues at the European Gaza Hospital in Khan Younis, with the emergency and outpatient departments and two operating theaters having now resumed functionality.

o   At the Al Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, the new emergency department and the hemodialysis unit are currently operational.  The Al Shifa Medical Complex was the largest hospital in Gaza and was destroyed during a two-week long IDF siege that began on March 18.

o   A hemodialysis unit comprising 18 dialysis machines has been established at the new Az Zawaida Field Hospital in Deir al Balah.

o   Polio Vaccination Update:

ü  The first round of vaccinations began on September 1st targeting 156,583 children under the age of 10.

ü  40 Health partners are supporting the vaccination effort through outreach, operating mobile vaccination teams and conducting vaccinations at health service points.

ü  Area-specific humanitarian pauses have enabled better access to the areas teams had to reach.

ü  Between September 2-3, vaccination teams conducted missions outside the areas under humanitarian pauses to reach more children. 

ü  As of September 4th, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 187,000 children have been vaccinated in Central Gaza.

ü  WHO and their partners are currently preparing to target other areas.

·         Food Security Update:

o   As of the end of August, about 450,000 cooked meals prepared in 130 kitchens were provided daily to families, which was a 35% decrease from early July. This is attributed to the multiple evacuation orders issued by the IDF, with at least 70 kitchens forced to either suspend cooked meal provision or relocate.

o   As of September 2nd, 14 bakeries are operational and being supported by humanitarian partners.

·         The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported on September 3rd, that at least 370,000 housing units have been damaged and  79,000 that have been destroyed

·         As of August 30th, UN Member States have disbursed approximately $1.60 billion out of the $3.42 billion (48%) requested to meet the most critical needs of the 2.3 million people in Gaza and 800,000 people in the West Bank.

 

Violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Highlights:

·         The IDF reports that Hamas is still holding 101 hostages.

·         On August 31st, the IDF reported that the bodies of the following hostages were recovered:

o   Carmel Gat

o   Eden Yerushalmi

o   Hersh Goldberg-Polin

o   Alexander Lobanov

o   Almog Sarusi

o   Master Sergeant Ori Danino

·         UNRWA reported that as of August 29th, 212 of their employees have been killed. 

·         The PRCS reported on September 3rd, that volunteer Emergency Medical Technician Dalia Hadaideh was injured by IDF shelling inside the Tulkarem camp.
