Measles Outbreak Situation Report #4

Nationwide Highlights:

·       The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting 483 confirmed cases in 20 jurisdictions:

o   A majority of these cases (42%) are children (ages 5-17).

o   Approximately, 97% of cases have an unknown or unvaccinated status.

o   14% of these cases required hospitalizations. 

·       The measles vaccine remains the best defense against contracting the virus. Receiving both doses of the vaccine can prevent 97% of future infections.

 

Texas Highlights:  

·       The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is reporting 400 cases in the South Plains and Panhandle regions:

o   398 of the cases had an unknown or unvaccinated status.

o   This outbreak is affecting 17 counties.  The county most affected (270 cases) remains Gaines County. 

o   41 people required hospitalizations.

·       Residents of West Texas can find the nearest vaccination clinic here.

 

New Mexico Highlights: 

·       The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is reporting 44 cases:

o   32 of the cases involve people who were unvaccinated.

o   Lea County has the highest number of cases (42 cases).

·       The State is continuing its statewide vaccination efforts.

·       On March 18th, the NMDOH reported that a traveler from Texas visited Guadalupe and Valencia counties while they were infected. They visited various locations between March 8-10.

 

Oklahoma Highlights:

·       On March 25th, the Oklahoma Department of Health reported nine confirmed and two probable cases in the northeastern part of the state:

o   All cases are linked through exposures to household or extended family; and initial cases reported exposure to the measles outbreak in West Texas and New Mexico.

o   At this time, no cases have resulted from exposure to public settings.

 

Ohio Highlights:

·       As of March 25th, the Ohio Department of Health reported 10 cases:

o   Nine of these cases are linked to an adult male reported last week as the state’s first measles case of 2025.

o   None of the individuals infected were vaccinated.

 

 

 

 

 

Kansas Highlights:

·       The Kansas Division of Public Health is reported 23 cases located in six counties.  20 of these cases involved unvaccinated individuals.
