Measles Outbreak Situation Report #6

Nationwide Highlights:

·       The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that as of April 10th, there are 712 confirmed cases in 25 jurisdictions around the country:

o   The majority of cases (38%) are children 5-19 years old.

o   97% of the cases were unvaccinated.

o   11% of cases required hospitalization.

·       The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is advising Americans that inhaled corticosteroids and clarithromycin (an antibiotic) can not treat or cure measles.

 

Texas Highlights:  

·       The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reported 541 cases as of April 11th:

o   Since April 8th, there has been an increase of 36 cases.

o   Gaines County is still reporting the majority of cases (355 cases).

o   5% of fewer than 30 of the confirmed cases, are estimated to be actively infectious. This is because their rash onset date was more than a week ago.

o   56 people have been hospitalized.

o   On April 6th, DSHS reported a second death of a child in the affected area. The child was not vaccinated and had no known underlying health conditions.

·       Secretary Kennedy Jr. at the request of the Governor on April 6th redeployed CDC teams to support State and local health officials. 

·       DSHS on April 7th updated the list of counties currently included in the designated outbreak area. It now includes Cochran, Dallam, Dawson, Gaines, Garza, Lynn, Lamar, Lubbock, Terry, and Yoakum counties.

 

New Mexico Highlights: 

·       The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is reporting 58 cases:

o   41 of the cases were unvaccinated and 11 had an unknown vaccination status.

o   Leas County is still reporting the majority of cases (55).

o   On April 8th a new case (unvaccinated child) was reported in Chaves County. The diagnosis makes Chaves the third county affected by the ongoing measles outbreak.

·       Vaccination efforts continue Statewide. NMDOH is planning clinics until May 23rd.

·       On April 11th, NMDOH reported a case of possible exposure to an infected individual that occurred between April 4-8 at a daycare center and a restaurant.

 

Oklahoma and Kansas Highlights:

·       The Oklahoma Department of Health is reported 12 cases (9 confirmed and 3 probable).  All 12 were unvaccinated.

·       The Kansas Division of Public Health is reporting 32 cases:

o   27 were unvaccinated.

o   A majority of the cases (16) were children ages 5-17.

o   One person has been hospitalized.

 

Indiana Highlights:

·       As of April 9th, the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) reported a total of six cases:

o   The first confirmed case was reported on April 7th.

o   All of these cases are connected to one another and no related to outbreaks in other states.
