Highlights:
• The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) responded to a fatal traffic crash that occurred at 3:15am on January 1st at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets:
o Multiple people were reportedly struck before the vehicle crashed.
o A total of 10 people were killed and 35 people were injured.
o When the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar opened fire on responding officers. Police officers returned fire and killed the suspect.
o Two NOPD officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. Both were transported to local hospitals, and they were last listed in stable condition.
o The suspect was 42 years old and was a U.S. born citizen from Texas. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has stated that they don’t believe the suspect acted alone.
o Additional weapons and a potential Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were found in the suspect’s vehicle.
o Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter.
o An ISIS flag was in the vehicle.
• The Sugar Bowl has been delayed for 24 hours out of an abundance of caution.
• The Governor has declared a State of Emergency.
• In the aftermath of the attack, families trying to locate loved ones in New Orleans are urged to use the following resources:
o Residents in Orleans Parish: Call 311 for assistance and press option 3.
o Families outside of Orleans Parish: Call 504-658-2299 and press option 3.
• The FBI is the lead investigative agency and are working with their partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.
• The FBI has set up a digital tip line, and are asking if anyone with information or video of the incident to submit them here or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
