Nominations Process
Presidential nominees are granted hearings by the relevant Senate committees. The committees will vote whether to forward the nominee to the full Senate to confirm or deny their appointment with a relevant Federal Department or Agency.
Senator Terms
Senators are elected to six-year terms, and every two years the members of one class face election or reelection. The three classes are:
• Class 1: These senators were elected to office in the November 2024 general election. Their terms run from the beginning of the 119th Congress on January 3, 2025, to the end of the 121st Congress on January 3, 2031. The list of these senators is available here.
• Class 2: These senators were elected to office in the November 2020 general election, unless they took their seat through an appointment or special election. Their terms run from the beginning of the 117th Congress on January 3, 2021, to the end of the 119th Congress on January 3, 2027. The list of these senators is available here.
• Class 3: These senators were elected to office in the November 2022 general election, unless they took their seat through appointment or special election. Their terms run from the beginning of the 118th Congress on January 3, 2023, to the end of the 120th Congress on January 3, 2029. The list of these senators is available here.
