Humanitarian Assistance Highlights:

·       The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that as of March 25th the humanitarian crisis remains dire, due to:

o   Displacement

o   Widespread Food Insecurity

o   Collapsed healthcare systems

·       Humanitarian organizations are working towards a decentralized coordination system, empowering local actors to lead response efforts.

·       The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) remains active in providing assistance:

o   On March 21st, Food baskets were distributed to 3,000 families located at shelters in Port Sudan.

o   The SRCS with 40 volunteers distributed food aid to 4,112 displaced persons at internal centers, hospitality centers, and a park in the Wadi Halfa locality.

o   On March 23rd, packages of aid supplies included hygiene items were provided to several Khartoum State hospitals.

·       More than 83,300 individuals crossed from Sudan into South Sudan through six border crossings in January and February.

·       Healthcare and Public Health Update:

o   The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) reports that 80% of the healthcare facilities throughout the country are non-functional.

o   Two thirds of the Sudanese states are experiencing more than three different disease outbreaks, which are exacerbated by the widening climatic shocks:

ü  More than 56,900 cases of cholera with 1,529 deaths have been reported as of February.

o   SAPA reported the following activities:

ü  In the month of February, they provided 4,825 patients with primary health services at medical centers, while 162 children received psychosocial support at the Hope Oasis Center in Zamzam camp.

ü  As of March 24th, SAPAs Pediatric Intensive Care Unit remains the largest and only fully functioning unit in the country.

ü  On March 26th, a SAPA Emergency Medical Team at the Gezira Hospital delivered life-saving care to 4,890 patients.

o   On March 20th, the World Health Organization (WHO) delivered 233,000 renal dialysis kits to the Ministry of Health.

o   WHO and their partners also finalized procurement of 60 dialysis machines, six water treatment units, dialysis chairs, other supportive supplies and medicines.

o   WHO and the Ministry of Health launched on March 19th a temporary mobile clinic in the Al-Fardos locality of East Darfur that will provide services to at least 20,000 people.

o   SRCS reported on March 23rd, that they opened a mobile clinic at a gathering center for displaced people coming from other states in Al-Salam village. This clinic’s goal was to detect cases of malnutrition in children.

·       Food Security Update:

o   On March 12th, the World Food Programme (WFP) was able to deliver food and nutrition supplies for 100,000 people in the Bahri and Omdurman in the Khartoum State.

o   As of March 24th, the WFP reported that the conflict, inflation and high food prices are making it harder for people to feed themselves. Sorghum prices are 155% higher than last year according to a recent Sudan Market Monitor report.

o   The WFP as of March 25th continues to scale up emergency assistance. In February they accomplished the following:

ü  1.4 million people received food packages and cash-based assistance.

ü  390,000 young children and mothers received nutrition aid.

·       The Sudan Humanitarian Fund allocated $30 million in February for programs in areas experiencing or at risk of famine, while the Central Emergency Response Fund provided $22 million for famine relief, returnee support, cholera response and enabling services.

 

Violations of International Humanitarian Law Highlights:

·       On March 14th, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out widespread raids on civilian homes in Buri al-Lamab, including killings, looting, and intimidation. The raids resulted in the deaths of six civilians and the injury of others.

·       The Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab on March 18th published a report on RSF artillery and mortar attacks on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Abu Shouk and El-Fasher

·       On March 24th, the Youth Citizens Observers Network reported that Khartoum was under continuous artillery and missile attacks in the Mayo, Ad Hussein, and Karary neighborhoods.  These attacks have resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.

·       The RSF also imposed a siege on Bara City which involved blocking students and patients from leaving.

·       On March 24th, Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) aircraft indiscriminately bombed the Tora Market in North Darfur.  This attack has killed hundreds of civilians and seriously wounded dozens.

·       The RSF as of March 24th has committed numerous acts of murder, looting, forced displacement, and rape in the Greif West market.  

·       The Emergency Lawyers reported on March 25th that the SAF bombed the city of El Fasher, resulting in dozens of civilian deaths.
